Let’s talk about self-love!

My journey with self-love started when I began this blog. It wasn’t a physical self-love at first, it was more accepting myself, who I am and having KLS. To say the least, I was embarrassed and I constantly wished this never happened to me. Looking back at the pages in my journal, it breaks my heart knowing that I hated what I was going through and how I thought I was a strange kind of different. At the time, I didn’t want to be different. Since then I have accepted myself, my wonderful brain and all of its unusual ways of working. I love being different, no matter how many challenges there are. I’ve grown so much and continue to express love and acceptance towards myself.

As for the physical self-love, nearly everyone looks in a mirror and finds certain things about themselves that they don’t like. I am in no way perfect and I still have days where I wish I could change something. Instead I began telling myself, if you don’t love it then change it and if you don’t change it, learn to love it. This is a process and I still have to remind myself that I am more than my reflection and I am capable of doing many things beyond what I see. We need to be reminded that our body is a literal shell that keeps us alive. Your organs are working as hard as they can, your heart is beating, your mind is constantly wandering and altogether it only wants to take us places and allow us to do things. You are so much more than what you see in the mirror or how you see yourself.

Recently, I’ve seen a lot of posts about people appreciating their well-being and happiness, as well as loving who they are and what they look like. This makes my heart so incredibly happy. I cannot explain how important and necessary self-love is. Self-love is something that needs to be worked on every single day, it is difficult (as sad as that is) and it doesn’t come overnight. It is something that requires dedication and there will be bad days, but you cannot focus your attention on that. As humans, we constantly gravitate towards negativity because it’s easy. Next time you think negatively about yourself, remind yourself that you are beautiful and wonderful in all sorts of ways. You will make your first step to self-love when you notice negativity and adjust your thoughts accordingly.

Everyone’s version of self-love is different. There’s no right or wrong way, as long as you build upon your strengths and be happy with yourself. You are the only person you live for and you have to make that enough, rather than seeking praise from others.

Enjoy the process towards self-love, both the good and the bad. This is an everyday committment but it’s worth every moment. Allow yourself to flourish and never let your mind convince you that you’re not worthy. Understand that you are capable of accomplishing so much and your first step to absolute happiness is loving everything that you are.
